The importance of human resource management in relation to productivity in an organization cannot be over emphasized because it is the life wire of every organization. This study examines the HR practices that can enhance performance from selected private school teachers in Abia state and to determine the HR practices that can endanger their performance as well as their retention at their work place. The population for the study consisted of all teachers in Aba and Umuahia metropolitan city of Abia state, Nigeria. The study is backed up by Ability, Motivation and Opportunity model AMO, which explains the relationship between HR practices and performance. Data was collected using face to face interview from a number of teachers from the selected private schools. Data collected were analyzed using thematic approach. The result of the study shows that of all the human resource management practices by school owners, salary payment mode is the most important.
